The MAGMA project will be conducted at The University of Mainz in Germany with an ERC consolidator grant over the next 5 years.
The project will develop and employ a new generation of 3D computer models to simulate magma flow, with a full magmatic system in arcs simulated whilst taking realistic rock rheologies and evolving melt chemistry into account.
By getting a deeper insight into how magmatic systems develop over geological timescales the MAGMA project may gain knowledge into why some only evolve into large super-volcanoes.
